I first read this book in grade school. I think, at that age, it's one of those life-changing books where, for the first time, you start to actually question feelings and events, as well as the motives of the people in your life. Or, perhaps I'm just projecting my own experience. In any case, The Giver reached me in a place that I didn't even know existed at the time. It's a wonderful, thought-provoking read, and I hope no one goes through life without reading it at least once.
